The economic and social disparities present in Latin America have led to heterogeneity in the region's architectural production systems, operating in convergence with the richness of its cultural and natural environments. These extraordinary conditions have been regularly normalized in the operation of these systems, giving rise to unconventional processes, generally based on individual or collective efforts, as well as tensions between their own conditions of necessity and opportunity.
EXTRA ORDINARY identifies new models of architectural production and creative working practices in Latin America that, from critical, collaborative, and specifically situated approaches, address cultural, social, material, labor, technological, and environmental issues, actively promoting a new landscape of architectural production in the region.
Despite their transformative potential, these unique production processes often remain isolated or hidden. In this sense, EXTRA ORDINARY establishes relationships between practices and how they respond creatively to local conditions of social, economic, and environmental inequality, giving rise to exceptional solutions that challenge the traditional limits of conventional design and construction. The architecture pavilion presents the different contexts in which they arise, as well as the strategies employed by these groups, individuals, and organizations of architects, builders, designers, and multidisciplinary professionals who, through their work, explore, interact with, and transform their environmental and sociocultural surroundings, operating freely between official and unofficial systems, institutions and self-management, technology and craftsmanship throughout Latin America.
