WAREHOUSE: DIGITAL INVENTORY OF POPULAR ARCHITECTURE

12.10.2019

RESEARCH: ANDRÉS SOUTO VILAROS

The culture of the popular and the self-construction present in Mexican architecture is usually associated with artisanal production and the visual interpretation of its repetitions. With the rise of the digital image and the reproduction of objects with greater speed and precision, the new digital tools that sought to incorporate the real world into virtual environments now take those objects and return them to their place of origin, mutually affected by the transit between one world and the other.

Warehouse: Digital inventory of popular architecture, probes the state of architecture by means of contemporary processes of production and dissemination outside the limits of official architectural culture. The exhibition presents new applications of popular technologies produced by the transit between the virtual and the material, ranging from handcrafted construction tools to virtual collective systems, revealing their mutual influence of current culture and manufacturing. Conceptualized as a warehouse, the exhibition is displayed as a three-dimensional, public and experimental inventory of objects and tools loaded with the symbolic and ornamental values of contemporary Mexican popular architectural culture. The Warehouse as a device to show, store, transform and download for free, thus becomes a means to speculate on all the potential applications that arise when an imperfect reality is reproduced in precise digital environments, reincorporating them into reality in unexpected forms and objects.
